our beliefs

At Somis Church, we believe following Jesus changes everything. Our desire is to help people be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do as He did. The following beliefs shape who we are, how we live, and the mission God has called us to together.

God

We believe God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. God is holy, loving, faithful, all-powerful, and completely worthy of our trust, worship, and obedience.

(Genesis 1:1, 26-27; Deuteronomy 6:4; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is fully God and fully man, co-equal with the Father. Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, revealed the heart of God to the world, and showed us what it means to truly live. He willingly gave His life on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for our sins, rose bodily from the dead three days later, defeated sin and death, ascended into Heaven, and will return again one day in power and glory. Jesus alone is the hope of the world and the only way to salvation.

(Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:22-23; John 10:30; Colossians 1:15-16; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Revelation 19:11-16)

THE Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son. He is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit lives within every believer from the moment of salvation, bringing comfort, conviction, guidance, power, and transformation. He helps us be with Jesus, become more like Jesus, and live out the mission of Jesus in our everyday lives. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live for God daily and gives every believer spiritual gifts to serve others and build up the church. As followers of Jesus, we desire to live in step with the Holy Spirit every day.

(John 14:16-17; John 16:7-13; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:13-14; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16, 12:4-11; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18)

Bible

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is fully trustworthy, without error in all that it affirms, and is the final authority for what we believe and how we live. Through Scripture, God reveals who He is, who we are, and His plan to redeem the world through Jesus Christ.

(2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 119:105, 160; Proverbs 30:5)

Human Beings

We believe every person is created in the image of God and has inherent dignity, value, and worth. From every ethnicity, background, and stage of life, people matter deeply to God and are loved by Him. God created humanity male and female, equal in value and dignity, to reflect His image and design. Although people were created for relationship with God, all of us are broken by sin, which separates us from Him and impacts every part of life.

(Genesis 1:26-28; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23; Galatians 3:28)

Salvation

We believe salvation is the free gift of God offered to all people through Jesus Christ. We can never earn forgiveness through good works, religion, or self-improvement. Only by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone, can we be forgiven and made right with God. Salvation begins when a person turns from sin and self-rule and places their trust in Jesus. Through Him we are forgiven, made new, adopted into God’s family, and given eternal life. Genuine faith in Jesus produces a growing life of obedience and transformation through the Holy Spirit as we learn to follow Jesus with our whole lives.

(John 1:12; John 14:6; Romans 5:1; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26)

Eternal Security

We believe that because salvation is the work of God’s grace, those who genuinely place their faith in Jesus Christ are secure in Him forever. Our salvation is not sustained by our own strength or performance, but by the grace, faithfulness, and keeping power of God.

(John 10:28-29; Romans 8:38-39; Hebrews 7:25; 1 Peter 1:3-5)

Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.

John 3:16; 1 John 5:11-13; Romans 6:23.

the Church

We believe the Church is the body of Christ and the family of God, made up of all who place their faith in Jesus Christ. The church exists to help people be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do as Jesus did by making disciples, loving one another, serving others, and sharing the hope and truth of the Gospel. We believe every follower of Jesus has a purpose and is called to use their gifts to build up the church and help others know and follow Him. We also believe all believers are spiritually united as one body through faith in Christ.

(Matthew 28:18-20; John 13:34-35; Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 4:11-16; Galatians 6:10)

Baptism and Communion

We believe baptism and communion are important acts of obedience and worship for every believer. Baptism is a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ and symbolizes a person’s new life in Him. Communion is a regular reminder of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, our dependence on His grace, and our unity together as His church.

(Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:41; Romans 6:3-4; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

Marriage and Relationships

We believe God designed marriage as a covenant relationship between one man and one woman, reflecting Christ’s love for His church. We believe God calls us to love others with both grace and truth and to honor Him with our lives, relationships, and sexuality.
(Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; Ephesians 5:21-33)

Christian Living

We believe following Jesus is more than believing the right things—it is a daily invitation to walk with Him, become more like Him, and join Him in His work in the world. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christians are called to pursue holiness, love sacrificially, seek justice and mercy, serve others, care for those in need, and reflect the character of Jesus in everyday life. Our lives should point people toward the hope, truth, and love of Christ.

(Micah 6:8; Matthew 5:13-16; John 13:35; Galatians 5:22-23; James 1:27; 1 John 4:16-17)

Eternity

We believe people were created to exist forever. Jesus Christ will return again to fulfill God’s purposes, judge evil, raise the dead, and establish a new heaven and new earth. Those who trust in Jesus will live forever in the presence of God in Heaven, while those who reject Him will remain eternally separated from Him. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.
(John 3:16; John 5:28-29; Romans 6:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Revelation 20-21)
